Nice Review! I totally agree about the Angel drilling into headquarters; the one in the series was seriously pretty lame. The fact that they made it awesome deserves serious props.
I'll always love Evangelion because it's essentially part of my life (I'm wearing Eva Unit 01 headphones as I type this) and because it was my first anime, but I can see Shinji as being a bundle of nerves. That's totally true, and I don't think you're SUPPOSED to like him as a character.
I haven't seen 2.0, unfortunately. As always, the UK is lagging behind the US in terms of DVD releases, and I don't download movies on principle, so I'm stuck until we get a DVD. I've watched trailers though, and by most accounts it's pretty damn good. I'm looking forward to it.
